v History of St. Peter’s Lutheran School
St. Peter’s Lutheran School has long been a vision of the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church as a means of ministering to the needs of the church and the community. In 1990 a temporary School Board was given the task of presenting a proposal to the congregation to establish a Christian Day school and preschool.
At a congregational dinner in May of 1992 the members were told, “Education is a part of Christian witness. It is a mandate of the Christian church, and is a mission of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.” The congregation voted unanamiously to continue the task of starting a school, and the job began. With the help of the “Builders in Christ” a group of volunteer construction workers and the congregation, buildings were put where only bare land was before. The administration building, early childhood center, primary classrooms, library and bathrooms were built. And on August 30, 2003 a new school was opened with 108 students in grades preschool-fourth. Chapel was opened to singing, “I Love You Lord,” and a message from Pastor D. Deuel reminding us that we are the “light of the world.”
In the eleven years since then we have grown to approximately 245 students in grades preschool-eighth grade, built another set of classrooms, computer room, science room and a playground. In addition, we have built the playfields, track and replaced the preschool playground. We have one class of each grade. We have a staff of over 30 full and part-time people from over 12 different local Christian churches. About 35% of our student body is from St. Peter’s, 35% from other local Christian churches and 30% are unchurched.
The school is operated by a nine member school board who is elected for 3 year terms by the congregation. All policies are approved by the church council. St. Peter’s Lutheran School continues to be seen and function as a mission outreach of the Church. Our mission statement says, “the mission of the school is Mission Outreach, Christian Nurture and Quality Academic and Religious Education.”
