Shortly after World War I a group of German Lutheran colonists from Russia settled in the Elk Grove area. There was not a Lutheran church within 25 miles and these people felt the need for a church of their own faith for themselves and their families. On May 17, 1923, St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church was incorporated.
The first church building was at the corner of Elk Grove-Florin Rd and Elk Grove Blvd where the Shell station currently stands. In 1956 the church building was moved down the road. As the church grew, buildings were added and expanded. In 1987 the congregation moved to the current site at 8701 Elk Grove-Florin Road.
In 1993 the mission of the church was expanded to include St. Peter’s Lutheran School. The school daily fulfills its mission statement of “Christian Nurture, Mission Outreach and Quality Academic and Religious Education.”
From a beginning of five families, St. Peter’s has increased over the past one hundred years to over 400 families. Three new churches have been planted over the years and countless numbers have heard the message of the gospel through Sunday worship, children and adult classes, youth gatherings, and small group Bible studies. Since 1999 many members have shared their faith in countries around the world through short term mission trips, and ten young men from St. Peter’s have been raised up as pastors in the Lutheran church to continue the spread of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
St. Peter’s Lutheran Church has been exceedingly blessed for 100 years and we continue to seek to share those blessings with our community, our nation and our world.
